Marshmallow and Jordan by Alina Chau

Marshmallow & Jordan by Alina Chau is a wonderful, heartwarming graphic novel about a girl, Jordan, and her elephant, Marshmallow. Jordan is paralyzed from the waist down because of an accident and has to use a wheelchair. Nonetheless, Jordan is still the best shooter on her basketball team. One day, when Jordan was walking home from school, she heard someone crying, when she went to look at what was happening, she realized it was actually a baby white elephant. The elephant’s knee was hurt she gave it a skateboard to stand on so it worked like a wheelchair. Jordan brought the elephant home and her mom, a vet, healed the elephant.

The elephant joined Jordan’s basketball team to cheer the team on. Jordan sadly can’t play because disabled people aren’t allowed to play. Her coach realized how sad Jordan was and suggested that she could try water polo. At first, the team wasn’t very accepting, but during their first game, she scored an amazing goal and she became one of the best players on her team.

I really like this uplifting graphic novel and have read it five times in three weeks! The illustrations are very colorful, but not too complicated, and the book has you hooked from the start.
