Pie in the Sky by Remy Lai is about a boy named Jingwen who has to move to Australia and doesn’t speak English very well. Jingwen feels like he is on a different planet because he can’t understand anyone or speak to them in English. The only thing Jingwen still likes to do is to bake cakes.
He and his brother, Yanghao, both love cakes and secretly bake cakes without telling their mom. Jingwen and Yanghao bake recipes from a menu he and his dad once made for a bakery that they would have opened in Australia if his dad hadn’t suddenly died. Pie in the Sky is an amazing story about someone who doesn’t fit in, so practically everyone can empathize with the main character, Jingwen. Another good aspect of this book is the illustrations. The illustrations do a wonderful job of showing how the characters feel and adding more depth to the story.
Remy Lai has also written a few other books including Fly on the Wall which is about a boy who has a very overprotective family. A cool thing about these books is that the titles are both idioms. Pie in the sky is an idiom for an impossible dream, and fly on the wall is an idiom for someone who observes something without being seen. Pie in the Sky and Fly on the Wall are very interesting books and I would recommend both books to anyone that likes realistic fiction.
