The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

The Wild Robot is a beautiful novel about a robot, Roz, who gets stranded on a deserted island. Roz arrives in a shipping crate from a wrecked ship and some curious otters turn her on. Roz doesn’t know what to do. She’s never been out of her shipping crate before, and certainly not in a forest. Roz decides to camouflage herself and goes out to observe the animals. She learns their language and behavior quickly and decides to introduce herself to them.

The animals aren’t very welcoming, most run away in fright. One day, she sees the fox laying on the ground with porcupine quills in its face. She pulls all the quills out and gains the trust of the fox. Sadly, things don’t get better; she accidentally kills a whole family of geese, but one. She wants to give it to a flock of geese, but the leader of the flock declines. She doesn’t know what to do and realizes that she has to raise it herself. Roz asks the beavers to build a home for her and her son, Brightbill. Roz slowly gains the trust of the animals from then on. Almost all of them trust her by the end of the year, but something terrible happens. It turns out Roz is being hunted by other robots to bring her back to the mainland. This is a heartfelt and action-packed book and I would recommend it to readers in first grade or above.

The next book in the series, The Wild Robot Escapes is where Roz goes on an adventure to find Brightbill and escape the robots that are chasing her. the chase leads her all over the place and has even more action than the first book. I really like both these books because they are very sweet, but also contain lots of drama and conflict.
