The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies is a lovely book about two siblings, Jessie and Evan. During summer break, their family receives a letter advising the family that Jessie and Evan have combined classes. Jessie is overjoyed that she, a third-grader, will be with her fourth-grade brother. Evan isn’t, he’s afraid that he’ll be embarrassed by his sister, who skipped a grade. Jessie and Evan have a fight, however, Jessie doesn’t understand why. Jessie isn’t very good with feelings but is great at math, contrary to Evan. Jessie suggests that they start a lemonade stand, sadly Evan refuses. Jessie gets really angry when she later sees Evan and his friend doing a lemonade stand without her. She decides to start one with Megan, so Evan would be impressed and want to join them, however, the opposite happens. Jessie and Evan later decide to start a war, a lemonade war. They put some rules in place and begin.
Jessie teamed up with Megan, and Evan got together all his friends to help him. At first, it goes well, but obstacles start to pop up. Evan gets pushed out of a shopping square for illegally selling food without a license, and Megan gets bored selling so many cups of lemonade every day. On top of that, Evan and Jessie have to keep their fight secret from their mom because they know she’s already sad about divorcing their dad.
I really like this book which is really unique because of the way Davies writes from both perspectives of Jessie and Evan. Also, anyone who has a sibling will be able to relate to this book in some way. It shows that siblings always have fights, no matter who it is, but still, love each other anyways.
