Tamamo the Fox Maiden: and Other Asian Stories

Tamamo the Fox Maiden: and Other Asian Stories is a book filled with breathtaking myths written by over twenty authors, all in the form of comics! The delightful illustrations and short tales make the book a wonderful bedtime story while the variety of genres still makes it an encapturing read for any age.

My favorite story is about a young boy that has the ability of super strength as long as he eats one food: rice. His journey begins when he saves an old granny from a gang of thieves in an alleyway and brings her back to his home to help her clean up. However, she starts to mutter something about the great flood and cleansing the world of evil, but also says something about how the boy and his mom can avoid it.

They must bury a jar of barbs and hair along with a toy ship in their backyard, and so they did. When the great flood came, granny gave them some advice and when they dug out the items, the little toy boat had turned into a giant ship and the jar had been filled with pearls, they set sail while granny gave them one last warning, “Rescue each creature you find afloat at sea” but “bring aboard no man or woman from out these foul seas!” (42).

I really loved this book because it was written by so many different authors. I would get to read so many different styles and compare them to one another. The illustrations also described the characters’ emotions in ways that words could not. It was a very remarkable book filled with incredible legends and myths.
