Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is a wonderfully suspenseful novel about a young genius named Artemis Fowl. The Fowls have built up their fortune from the past generations from robbing, and when Artemis’s dad decides to invest in a legitimate shipping company, he is presumed to have been killed by the Russian Mafia, so when it’s up to Artemis Fowl to reclaim the family riches, he decides to do something no one has ever done before: to capture a fairy for a hefty ransom of fairy gold. Artemis Fowl may be a genius, but one of the only things Artemis Fowl doesn’t know is how easily this can all end in catastrophe.
Artemis Fowl heads to Ho Minh Chi City to look for an alcoholic sprite that can give Artemis all the information he needs to capture a fairy. After being on the hunt for months, Artemis finally finds her and takes something all fairies carry on them, the Book of the People, which contains all the knowledge on fairies that he needs.
Artemis and his bodyguard, Butler, set up a stakeout and prepare to catch a fairy on the night of a full moon which is when they need to replenish their magical powers. They sit in wait until a fairy appears and begins the ritual in which a fairy must bury an acorn near an ancient twisted oak in the earth to regain their power. Then, they pop out and kidnap the fairy to bring her back to their mansion where they trap her in a tiny cement cage, ready to hold her ransom for the fairy gold.
However, this is one of the few mistakes that Artemis makes. He and Butler have captured a member of LEPrecon, the underground fairy police unit comprised of the most elite fairies. Able to send troops to retrieve their lost fairy. But despite that, Artemis is still able to transform one of his failures into an advantage over the fairies, outsmarting them over and over again. Fending off every attack they send at him, until he can’t…
I chose to review this book becuase it’s been one of my favorite series since third grade as well as a perfect choice for the upcoming holidays when you have nothing to do. Reading can be perfect for any break, especially if there’s a long series that you could just lay in bed and read the whole day away, book after book after book. Artemis Fowl is the perfect series for this because of the eight books, but even if you manage to complete this series, there’s even a continuation of the series called The Fowl Twins.
