Grace for Gus by Harry Bliss

Grace for Gus by Harry Bliss is a charming picture/comic book about a shy kid named Grace and her class guinea pig, Gus. Throughout the novel, Grace raises money through various activities such as performing and drawing to get Gus a buddy. However, the story isn’t the main focus of the book; instead, it’s the illustrations and various homages to some of the greatest comic books ever created.

This book is based on a short film made by Bliss’s son and (like I said) filled with so many nods to other comic books with my favorite one being multiple appearances of Snowy, from Tintin. It’s just so interesting when you can flip through the pages and look for all the characters you might know. Not only that, but Bliss is also able to capture the look of the characters perfectly and it really is like they just jumped from their regular novels into this one.
