Spy School by Stuart Gibbs (updated)

Spy School by Stuart Gibbs is undoubtedly one of my favorite series. This book is about a normal twelve-year-old boy named Ben who attends a normal middle school. However, Ben has one incredible skill; He has level 16 math skills and that’s why, on one fateful day, he gets chosen to join a spy school. Ben gets recruited by one of the nation’s top spies, Alexander Hale, a descendant of the Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale. After Agent Hale and Ben check in with his parents to make sure he’s allowed to attend this new school, they promptly set course for spy school. This turns out to be either the best or worst decision of Ben’s life.

While at spy school, Ben has to face not one, but two assassination attempts, getting locked in a metal box, protecting his friend from a squad of military personnel, and he also has to defuse a ticking bomb. The stakes are high, and failing to complete these tasks could mean the death of everyone at spy school.

I absolutely love this series. I’ve read every book starting from when I was in third grade all the way up to now in eighth grade. I’ve read the entire series (eleven books) at least three times, and the first eight books at least five times. Another thing I love about this series is that it doesn’t have something that is common with a lot of other long series. The books don’t get boring or less imaginative as the series goes on, and sometimes, I even find them more interesting and fun than the first couple of books.

Something else that I really love about the series is the main character, Ben. I feel like Ben represents everyone. Everyone meaning normal people who don’t really think they’re really special or will accomplish something huge in their lives. Along his journey, Ben starts to find out that this isn’t true, he isn’t useless, and can contribute significantly to the world, and I think that’s something a lot of people have to recognize. This series is what really got me to fall in love with reading, so in that case, you could say it’s what really started this website, too. You should definitely read this series. Multiple times.
