The Wild Robot is a beautiful novel about a robot, Roz, who gets stranded on a deserted island. Roz arrives in a shipping crate from a wrecked ship and some curious otters turn her on. Roz doesn’t know what to do. She’s never been out of her shipping crate before, and certainly not in a forest. Roz decides to camouflage herself and goes out to observe the animals. She learns their language and behavior quickly and decides to introduce herself to them.

The Spy School series is no doubt, my favorite series of all time. Spy School by Stuart Gibbs is a wonderful novel about a boy named Ben Ripley who goes to attend St. Smithen’s Science Academy for Boys and Girls, but that’s only a cover. St Smithen’s is actually a school for spies. Ben is told that he gets chosen to go to St. Smithen’s because of his insane math skills, but that’s not quite true. The Brilliant World of Tom Gates by Liz Pichon is a very quirky and funny novel about a boy, Tom Gates, who loves drawing. The story is told in the first person by Tom. Tom writes about having band practice with his next-door neighbor Derek Fingle, and about Marcus Meldrew, a bully. Tom always makes up ridiculous excuses to get out of doing homework, sometimes even saying that aliens wanted to know more about the planet earth and taking his homework away. The illustrations are also marvelous. They do a wonderful job of showing how Tom feels about certain people.

The Donut Fix by Jessie Janowitz, is a wonderful novel about a boy called Tristan Levin who has to move from New York City to a tiny town named Petersville where there is only a general store, a gas station, and no restaurants at all. Tristan, also known as Tris, and his younger sisters Jeanine and Zoe all hate the idea of moving to another town where there is nothing to do.
